Making Breakfast Oats fun
In keeping with the breakfast theme, I thought I would post another delicious breakfast option. Especially since we are days away from the first day of school! And easy but densely nutritious and filling breakfast options are going to be necessary for school mornings!
I generally try to avoid any cereals with my kids. Don’t get me wrong, they are delicious and my kids love them! But generally they are highly processed and don’t really give anyone very much energy for the day. I find that the kids are asking for more food an hour after they eat cereal. So instead I make the kids Steel Cut Oats a couple of times a week.
To make the Oats a little more fun I create a ‘Sundae Bar’ theme and fill lots of small bowls with special toppings their little fingers can put in their bowl of Oats all on their own.
My favourite toppings include bowls of Chia, Hemp Seeds, Chopped Almonds, Shredded Coconut, Chopped up fruit, such as blueberries and peaches. And my favourite part is to blend up some strawberries to create a Strawberry Sauce. I let the kids put as much as they want in their Oats. Its a great alternative to Maple Syrup.
I Start the night before and take 1 cup of Organic Steel Cuts Oats and put them in a bowl. Cover the oats with water. Let them soak overnight. When you go to cook them the next morning they will only take approximately 5 minutes to cook.
The next morning, thoroughly rinse the oats. Put them in a pot with about 3/4 cup of water. Bring to a boil and let simmer for appx. 5 minutes. Keep an eye on the oats — if they need more water then just add little bits at a time until the oats are cooked.
Place in small bowls for the kids. Add in some cows milk or almond millk if desired.
Present all the topping options in front and let kids choose their own.
Hope this makes your morning rush a little more fun and a little more nutritious!
